For Andrew Whitehead, Columba 1400 has been a place of growth, community, challenge and opportunity for more than a decade.
Andrew first encountered Columba 1400 in 2015 when he took part in a Young People’s Leadership Academy. Returning in 2016 as a volunteer, and again two years later in 2018, as part of a school work-experience placement.
Since then, Andrew has worked across almost every area of the organisation, building a unique understanding of how Columba 1400 operates and the impact it creates. Over the years he has taken on roles in the social enterprise café, administration, facilitation, events, maintenance and operations. This breadth of experience has given him a deep appreciation of both the visible and behind-the-scenes work that enables thousands of young people and key adults to take part in life-changing leadership experiences.
Alongside his work with Columba 1400, Andrew completed a degree in Business and Management with the University of the Highlands and Islands, graduating with First Class Honours in 2024. Balancing study with full-time work required dedication, perseverance and focus, qualities reflected in both his academic achievement and professional contribution. He continues to bring the knowledge and skills gained through his studies to his current role, helping strengthen systems, processes and programme delivery across the organisation.
Andrew currently works as a Facilitator with Columba 1400 in Skye, playing a key role in the delivery of leadership academies for young people and the key adults in their lives, working closely with participants and the Columban Team to ensure every academy runs smoothly.
Whether coordinating logistics, supporting facilitators, managing operational detail or helping participants feel welcomed and valued, Andrew approaches each aspect of his work with care, professionalism and a strong commitment to service.
Andrew’s connection to community extends beyond his role at Columba 1400. He is also a Director on the Board of the Staffin Community Trust, reflecting his commitment to making a positive contribution to life in his local area.
In 2025 when Andrew joined Columba 1400 team members in taking on the challenging 37km Trotternish Ridge Challenge as part of Columba 1400’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Battling wind, rain and rugged terrain, the team completed the trek while raising vital funds to support future generations of young people and key adults.
From young participant to key member of the team, Andrew’s story reflects what Columba 1400 is all about: recognising potential, nurturing leadership and creating opportunities for people to lead lives of purpose, meaning and contribution.
