Jessica Chappelle: A Journey of Leadership and Self-Belief
Nine years ago, I was lacking self-belief. I struggled to fit in, felt quite lonely, and my family was going through a tough period of adjustment, my younger sister had just received an autism diagnosis, and things at home were changing quickly.
So, when I was given the chance to attend a Columba 1400 Leadership Academy in 2016, I was curious and excited and terrified, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I was drawn to the idea of developing my leadership skills. I felt both nervous and excited – apprehensive about stepping out of my comfort zone but eager to see what I could gain from the experience.
From the moment I arrived, something shifted – I felt safe, supported, and encouraged to be myself. The experience wasn’t about changing who I was; it was about uncovering the strengths that were already inside me.
Over six days, I discovered a confidence I hadn’t known I had, an ability to ask the right questions, and a natural leadership style that worked well in a team setting. More importantly, I learned to believe in myself – something I had struggled with before.
One of the most valuable activities we did was thinking about the future – our goals, challenges, and how to overcome obstacles. That exercise became particularly relevant when it came to applying for university and jobs. It gave me a sense of resilience and problem-solving, showing me that perseverance and creativity are key to achieving my ambitions.
A Lasting Impact
The relationships I built through Columba 1400 have lasted to this day. During my time at the Leadership Academy, I gained a support network of peers and teachers, key adults who encouraged and championed me through the challenges of high school and beyond. Having that sense of belonging and a safe space to talk made a significant difference in my confidence and decision-making.
Even years later, I can see how small moments of kindness and encouragement during my time at Columba 1400 shaped who I am today. Conversations with facilitators and mentors helped me make decisions about my future, from changing my degree when I realised it wasn’t the right fit to embracing aspects of my personality that I once felt self-conscious about. Those moments had a ripple effect, and looking back, I can clearly see how they added up to something much bigger.
Carrying Leadership Forward
Since my time at Columba 1400, I’ve continued to put my leadership skills into action. I now run the Glasgow branch of Urban Angels, a community for women and non-binary people. Our goals are to promote safety, challenge victim-blaming culture, and tackle loneliness. I manage a team of eight, ensuring we communicate effectively and work together to create a space where people feel safe enough to be themselves.
I am also a member of the St Margaret of Scotland Youth Group, where I travel to Lourdes each year to support sick pilgrims. This experience has been deeply meaningful, as we spend time providing companionship and care to those with terminal illnesses, disabilities, or life-altering conditions.
Being part of their journey has reinforced what I first learned at Columba 1400 – that leadership doesn’t have to be loud – it can be sitting with someone quietly, offering kindness, and being present. It is about service.
Leading the Next Generation of Columbans
My journey with Columba 1400 has now come full circle. I am honoured to serve as a Young Person Consultant on the Columba 1400 Board, where I have the opportunity to contribute to the organisation’s strategic direction and ensure that young people’s voices remain at the heart of its work.
Additionally, I lead the Columban Youth Team, a group of young graduates who have all been shaped by the Columba 1400 experience. Together, we work to support, inspire, and connect the next generation of young leaders, helping them to develop the same confidence and self-belief that we gained through our own journeys.
Advice for Future Participants
For anyone considering Columba 1400, my advice is simple: embrace the experience and give it your all. It is more than just a leadership programme – it’s an opportunity to discover your strengths, build lifelong connections, and gain the confidence to shape your own path.
It won’t change who you are, but it will help you see the value in who you already are – and that is life-changing in itself.
